Where does 'Encanto' take place? The towns that inspired Disney film

Generally, the Casita is kind and very helpful towards the family, using its ability to rearrange its features to suit the family's needs or aid them their daily routines. Casita also has power to do things in the magical rooms, though that power can be cut off if a gifted family member is emotionally disconnected from the family (like Bruno's Tower, which later was restored to being a part of Casita when Bruno returns). The Casa Madrigal is a magical house created by the magic candle owned by Alma Madrigal and after the death of her husband, Pedro, who was killed by soldiers after they conquered their previous village. The ground floor consists of recreational rooms, such as the kitchen and dining room. The second floor is basically one long balcony that overlooks the courtyard and it's where all of the bedrooms are located.

Mirabel suddenly sees Casita cracking and the candle's flame flickering, but Casita temporarily repairs itself when Mirabel attempts to show her family the damage. The next day, Mirabel's 19-year-old sister Luisa, who has the gift of superhuman strength, confesses to feeling overwhelmed by her near-constant obligations. Luisa then suggests that Bruno's room, located in a forbidden tower in Casita, may hold the secret to why the magic is being threatened. Encanto premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on November 3, 2021, and was released in the United States on November 24 over a 30-day theatrical run. Although it underperformed at the box office, grossing $256.8 million worldwide against a $120–150 million budget, it achieved wider commercial success after its release on Disney+ on December 24, 2021. The film received acclaim for its characterization, music, animation, voice acting, emotional depth, and cultural fidelity; reviews named magic realism and transgenerational trauma as the film's core concepts.

Mirabel reluctantly apologizes to Isabela, who confesses she does not want to marry Mariano and is burdened by her image of perfection. However, when Mirabel attempts to explain her findings to Alma, she lashes out at Mirabel, accusing her of causing the family's misfortunes out of spite for not having a gift. Finally fed up with her grandmother's treatment of her, Mirabel calls out Alma for her unreasonable expectations, saying that no one is good enough for her and that Alma is the reason for the miracle's fading. The ensuing argument creates a fissure that splits the nearby mountain and demolishes Casita as the candle extinguishes, leaving the Madrigals powerless. An armed conflict forces Pedro and Alma Madrigal, a young married couple, to flee their home village in Colombia with their infant triplets Julieta, Pepa and Bruno.

All of this apparel is available now at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, and online at shopDisney.com. The only exception to the magical rule so far is the sweet, smart Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz), who never received her gift and has since felt like the family outcast, bending over backward to earn her place. As she starts to see cracks in the foundation of their beloved casita, Mirabel probes deeper into the family’s magic. She ultimately realizes that all of her family members are caught in the trap of perfectionism, believing that they have to use their gifts in the ways others want them to without remaining authentic to themselves and their desires.

The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. Through the candle, it gives each member of the family a magical gift on their fifth birthday. Setin Colombia, “Encanto” embraces the diversity, culture, people and music of thecountry. Familia, a group of Latinx Disney Animation employees, even sharedtheir personal perspectives and experiences to help shape the film. Similarly, global teams across The Walt Disney Company collaborated with colleagues in theU.S.

Sheegog’s creation has both a professional sheen and a do-it-yourself quality. It’s important to note that it will always be free, as the family doesn’t want to attract the attention of corporate lawyers — timed reservations are required solely to make sure the home and neighborhood aren’t overrun. Don’t worry about the music because your family can dance to live counselor-led singalongs to the film’s favorite tunes like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure” throughout the show. And don’t forget the family photo that captures the magical gifts as a keepsake of your visit.

And the Walt Disney Co., of course, has a romanticized history with railroads, as Walt Disney once had a backyard railway of his own and is said to have dreamed up Mickey Mouse on a cross-country train trip. Should Encanto come to Disneyland in some capacity, it wouldn’t be the first time guests encountered the Madrigals in the park. A face character for Bruno was among those guests could meet at Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure in 2022 and a projection show featuring the song “We Don’t Talk about Bruno” played on the It’s a Small World façade for a while.

And we designed, for her dress and her environment, a lot of dahlias, hydrangeas, orchids, daisies, amongst other flowers from Colombia,” says Bové. Luisa also moves effortlessly, though with a physicality more fitting to her power of superstrength — the animators “found a lot of inspiration looking at movement of female shot put athletes,” says dos Anjos. After a few hours of fruitless search, Alma finds a tearful Mirabel back at the river where Pedro died. She explains how, in her determination to preserve the magic, she ignored the toll it took on her family and finally takes responsibility for what happened ("Dos Oruguitas"). After hearing Alma's tragic backstory, Mirabel tells her that despite her flaws, she is the one who brought and protected the family together all these years. After a golden butterfly appears, they reconcile, and Bruno appears and confronts Alma to defend Mirabel, unexpectedly cheering her up with his return.

The kitchen had one large stretch of counter with animatable tiles, and layout worked around that limited space. The construction and choreography of movement was like playing an instrument, which was fitting for the musical (with songs composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the score by Germain Franco). “We did Zoom presentations with Colombian architectural consultants about methods of construction,” said Disney production designer Ian Gooding (“Moana”).

Later that evening, Mirabel's oldest sister Isabela, who can make plants and flowers grow whenever she wants, is supposed to become engaged to their neighbour Mariano Guzmán. But Mirabel's oldest cousin Dolores, who has super hearing, lets everyone know that she overheard Mirabel talking with her father about Bruno's vision. The Casita begins to crack again, causing everyone's powers to go out of control, ruining the night and Mariano's proposal when Pepa accidentally starts a rainstorm. As everyone runs, Mirabel follows a group of rats and finds a secret passage behind a portrait. There she meets Bruno, who tells that his vision of Mirabel would have got her in trouble with the family so he broke the vision and went into hiding to protect her. Bruno tells her that the vision could change, meaning that Mirabel would either destroy the Madrigal family or fix it.

The three return to the village and assemble the other Madrigals to rebuild Casita, with the townsfolk joining in. Mirabel installs a new doorknob to the main door, restoring the family's gifts and reviving Casita. Audiences are experiencing Disney’s Encanto in theaters and falling in love with the family Madrigal. But there’s a bonus character in the film that quickly became one of my favorites known as Casita. Among the details revealed during a press day with the filmmakers, some of the most interesting were all about the house where Mirabel and her family live.
